BIO: - Ginny has a master's degree in botany and decades of gardening
experience in New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions, but all of
her previous knowledge was not relevant on her 1.5 acre lot in
northeast Florida. She opened her books and bought more to
educate herself on what works in Florida. Four years later, through
hurricanes and droughts, she's still reading, learning, experimenting,
and sharing what she has unearthed.
- Member, Florida Native Plant Society
- Manager, Backyard Habitats Webring
PRINT: - Author of "Sustainable Gardening for Florida," a book to be published
by University Press of Florida early in 2009.
- "Adventures of a Transplanted Gardener" columns are carried by
Jacksonville's newspaper, Florida's Times Union (online and print)
and in the online plant encyclopedia Floridata.com.
- Ginny is the gardening writer for Vero Beach Magazine.
GARDEN: - A narrow acre and a half lot with a good sized natural pond in the
front and a 110-acre lake out back. The previous owner had sodded
much of the lot with St. Augustine grass, but now there are numerous
meadows, and a couple of areas for growing vegetables. In north
Florida, Ginny harvests vegetables all year long - the seasons bear
little resemblance to normal temperate climates. For instance,
tomatoes peter out in July! but you can plant a second crop in
August.
- Ginny's lot is certified by National Wildlife Federation as a Backyard
Habitat.
