About Susan Harris, Editor
Let's see. I'm a gardening coach, GardenRant blogger, Master Gardener, garden writer, and activist for urban and suburban greening. On this webite I combine my own articles with some terrific ones written by top horticulturists and garden writers from around the country.
Where? In Takoma Park, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C., in USDA Zone 7A and the Mid-Atlantic Humidity Belt.
Writing in Print
- In print, my column "The Gardening Coach" appears in two Maryland newspapers.
- My articles have appeared in Landscape Architecture Magazine, Organic Gardening, Washington Home and Garden, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's publication. Coming soon - Fine Gardening.
Writing on the Web
- My Sustainable Gardening Blog recently was voted "Best Organic Blog" in an international vote. It carries news and garden stories from the perspective of a sustainable gardener (that's me), and occasionally goes off-topic altogether.
- I write and produce the rowdy, award-winning blog GardenRant with my co-conspirators, grinning in the photo right.
Garden Coaching
- My Garden Coaching has been featured in the New York Times, on "CBS Sunday Morning," and just about everywhere.
- In order to promote this low-cost service to beginning gardeners, I write a blog for and about garden coaches, and mentor new coaches across the country.
Activism/Speaking
- I co-founded the DC Urban Gardeners and now write their website and blog, DC Urban Gardeners.
- I co-founded the Regional Garden Gurus, dedicated to providing online regional gardening education. Check out my awesome partners.

- In 2008 I spoke to the Garden Writers Association national convention and to local journalism classes about writing online, primarily blogging. I talked about urban and sustainable gardening to DC's EcoWomen, the DC Historical Society and Elderhostel visitors to Washington.
- After writing a proposal about Greening the White House Grounds, I launched the national media campaign Green the Grounds in April 2009, with the mission of encouraging America's First Families (including governors and mayors) to practice and promote sustainable landscaping on the grounds of their official residences.
