Anemone x hybrida / Japanese Anemone

Here you see Japanese anemone where they’re not supposed to be happy — afternoon sun. So don’t try this at home (it’s happier with morning sun and high afternoon shade.) It’s also supposedly short-lived, but they’re still going strong for me after 15 years. Pictured is the popular variety ‘Honorine Jobert’.

Details

• Tough, fall-blooming in white or pink.
• To 3′ tall.
• Sun or shade; morning sun is preferred. In hot sun, needs more frequent watering.

Care

• Watered well during their first year.
• Tracy DiSabato-Aust recommends deadheading once early in the bloom period, then letting the dead flowers stay until spring. Me? I don’t remove the dead flowers until they start to look bad in late fall.
• Experts warn never to transplant in fall, which they say is usually fatal, so do it in spring only.
