Front Yard Garden is Palette for Artist

Welcome to Suzanne’s Garden, one of my favorites in the neighborhood. Designed by Holt Jordan, her landscape architect/neighbor, its square inside — the canvas — is surrounded by a flagstone path and then the border on the outside. And while the border contains plenty of shrubs, grasses, and perennials of varying heights, the canvas has been painted with different plants almost every year. For the first two years Suzanne grew a cover crop there, a feat of patience completely unknown in my own garden. Actually, it looked pretty cool. And this year it was filled with giant sunflowers and a mix of perennial and annual grasses, especially one called “Purple Rain.”

I understand Suzanne’s an artist; no surprise there.
