All-Native Lawnless Gardens in Pennsylvania

At a home in Lancaster, PA, the red flowering Kalmia is seen here in bloom, with Sporobulus herterolopsis (Prairie Dropseed) as the groundcover. The grass is intermingled among everything is Phlox subulata (Moss Pink).

Above and below, the yellow flowers are Chrysogonum virginianum (Green and Gold). The dainty, lighter yellow flowers are Aquilegia canadensis 'Corbet' (Columbine). The tiny white flowers along the edges are Sedum ternatum 'Larinem Park' (Wild Stone Crop). The purplish foliage is Viola labradorica (Labrador Violet), and the pink flowers are Phlox Subulata (Moss Pink).

Next up are 2 photos of another lawnless, all-native garden he designed, this one in the Bethlethem, PA area, showing some tough groundcovers that he recommends highly. In the first photo the evergreen ground cover in the foreground is Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Bearberry).

Below, more Chrysogonum virginianum (Green and Gold) with Senecio aurea (Golden Ragwort).

Many thanks to Larry Weaner Design in Glenside, Pennsylvania for the use of their photos and plant lists. Larry's office tells me he designs with native plants exclusively, though sometimes they're mixed in with pre-existing nonnative plants.
