My favorite native plants for the garden

April 27, 2010 · 2 comments

With so many people interested in adding native plants to their garden, I thought it was time to weigh in with a list of my favorites. That’s based on their actual performance in my garden, y’all.

I’ll fess up that this ‘Little Henry’ Virginia sweetspire isn’t mine, though.  My full-size Itea is doing well and since seeing its little brother here in someone else’s garden, I ran out and bought 5 of them.  Now it’s “Grow, Henry, grow!”

Itea ‘Little Henry’ seems so lovely, and actually I came very close to purchasing a set of 3 just over the weekend, but a Garden Center employee cautioned that they require mostly sun or part-sun. I always see this plant show up on lists of shrubs that can take shade, but didn’t want to take the chance and so I got Leucothoe Scarletta instead.

Last year I planted 10 different wildflower plants from seed, and they overwintered well, and are all doing fine. I’m so excited, and hope they will all bloom this year.
