Fronts Without Lawns

Margaret3_1Here’s a delicious preview of tomorrow’s  house and garden tour here in town; I couldn’t wait till these lovely gardens are crawling with tour-goers in bright sun.  You all expect better than that and I’m just trying to please.

First up is a really cool example of house and garden colors working together.  And this professional landscape designer’s front garden is jam-packed with small trees, shrubs, and perennials.  Best I recall, her back garden holds a 6-foot cow sculpture, which you’d better believe I’ll be burning up theBottlehouse2 pixels over tomorrow on the tour.

The garden next door uses plants and color in the same way, and has this amazing bottle tree as a focal point.  I’m told this is a Southern tradition but it must be farther south than my native Central Virginia because it’s the first I’ve ever seen.  Here’s another one courtesy of the Worldwideweb.

And a tour through the Town of Takoma wouldn’t be complete without this popular political message, which preaches to the choir here but that’s okay; it’s nice to see.  It says "Don’t Legislate Discrimination" and refers to laws that prohibit gay marriage.

We appreciate your posting the last image with the political sign…and the way you put it. Michael and I could get legally married as a very long term couple in Massachusetts, but I am a Federal employee and all the HUGE benefits available to me are not afforded to us because of the DOMA, the Federal Defense of Marriage Act. I hope I am not way out of line, but your post really hits me as a gay gardener and I do really enjoy reading your gardenblog.
Best regards, Robert…and Michael

R&M, thanks so much for a great comment. I try real hard to create a gardenblog that’s a respite from strong political feelings like my own, but I’ll break my rule in this case to state what to me is the obvious and I’ll put it in an innocuous place, like a comment.

To wit: Laws and practices that discriminate against people based on their “sexual orientation” serve to bully and punish people whose gender choice is different from the majority. And a society that allows that kind of treatment of any minority is just barbaric.

Amen to that, Susan. And thanks for speaking out about this hot topic.

Even here in supposedly- progressive Canada, Stephen Harper is working behind the scenes to reopen the equal marriage debate and repeal the rights of same-sex couples to marry. Even though a poll shows 2/3 of Canadians are against this action! Visit http://www.equal-marriage.ca/ for more info.

You know, I thought those signs were about the recent immigration issues! I guess the pink color went totally by me and I could never get close enough to read the fine print on them. Just shows you where my concerns are at – I had thought the gay marriage issue was addressed and buried at the last presidential election – but good to see the new signs and a resolve out there not to settle for the status quo.

BTW back on topic – that Takoma House & Garden Tour was a delight and am already looking forward to next year’s event!
