I second Alice's comment. If someone mentions Susan Harris, I think "Yeah, the Takoma Gardener. I read her." I didn't know there was another one.

Your feelings about azaleas perfectly echo my sentiments about Indian hawthorn: overused, ill-pruned, and only two weeks of scentless glory. People grow both down here in Austin, but our soil is so limey that azaleas are really a stretch. I think people resort to Indian hawthorn as an alternative.

Amen on the azaleas. I just roll my eyes at the folks who line up for the Azalea Trail here in March. They're PAYING (not to mention waiting in line and trying to find scarce parking) to see the same shrub over and over in the same 10 shades of whocares. Oh well. To each his own. But still, amen on the azaleas.

Isn't a bird shitting on you supposed to be good luck?

At least you were in the comfort of your own garden when the bird shitter decided to let loose. Nothing worse than being far from a shower and having that happen. Sorry for the crapper, but I'm sure you made some great rearrangements to your already lovely beds. :)Elizabeth
