Sustaining You
This section covers everything from gardening as a reliable source of transcendence to iPods and Adirondack chairs, with injury prevention thrown in for good measure. After all, what's a sustainable garden without the gardener?
Sit a Spell
- Sitting a spell is one of gardening's big pay-offs, but I'm amazed how few gardens have seating at all. It's easy with Adirondack chairs - they're incredibly comfortable, come with their own side table (thanks to wide, flat arms) and cost as little as $110 each. The article in that link makes a plug for teak benches, too.
- Coming soon - a report on sources of cheap but sturdy umbrellas like this one.
The Spirit of the Gardener
- This newspaper article about gardening with nature touched lots of seasoned gardeners, including me.
- Michele Owens urges graduating classes to "go forth and garden" because it's a "reliable source of transcendence" and a "source of hope." This speech inspired me and I'm already a gardener!
- Turns out there's something in the DIRT that makes us happy.
- Digital photography lets me enjoy my garden all winter, not to mention share it with all of you. This page follows my journey through the technical maze to photographic adequacy, and bliss.
The Body of the Gardener
- Pilates and the Middle-Aged Garden is about my back-injury prevention program, without which I'd be knitting instead.
- Here's my Childhood Anti-Obesity Plan - you won't be surprised it involves being outdoors.
- This Washington Post article about how little time American kids now spend outdoors is heartbreaking, and not JUST because the author neglected to mention gardening as a particularly cool way for kids to enjoy nature.
Sounds
- Music in the Garden sks if it's a gardening sacrilege to listen to anything while gardening. Next I reflect on the comments to that first article.
- In XM Radio - The Results I'm all excited about a new source of music without commercials or downloading.
- Coming soon - the iPod in the garden.
